The Best Cannabis Butter Recipe

How to make weed butter/oil is the first thing to learn if you’re keen to start cooking with cannabis. Cannabis butter can also be known as Cannabutter, weed butter, pot butter, bud butter etc. Although there are a host of names, the recipe and the way we cook it is the same.

The two main compounds found in cannabis (CBD and THC) are released into the butter to leave you with cannabis butter. These compounds are fat-soluble meaning they require heat to be activated; hence the need to use them in butter when making edibles.

Edibles make an effective way of consuming and enjoying the benefits of cannabis. However, they come at a price and learning how to make homemade cookies, cannabutter and other edibles laced with marijuana will certainly make thing’s cheaper. Below you’ll find a comprehensive guide to the Best Cannabis Butter Recipe

This Recipe Makes

• 15 “strong” portions
• 30 “regular” portions
• 50 “light” portions

Cooking/Storage Equipment Required for CANNA-BUTTER:

  • A Grinder
  • A stove to heat the marijuana butter.
  • A medium sized heavy duty sauce pan/pot with lid.
  • A measuring cup.
  • A whisk or a large fork to mix the material with the water/butter solution in the pot.
  • Cheese cloth to strain the material before cooling.
  • A bowl large enough to hold and cool the Cannabis Butter material.
  • A heavy duty plastic wrap to handle and compress the weed butter into a smaller, easier to handle shape.
  • A freezable container to store the finished Canabutter.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz cannabis buds (or 3 oz trim)
  • 1 pound butter (usually 4 sticks of butter)
  • 1 litre water

Note: The butter needs to sit in the fridge overnight, so make your butter a day ahead of time!

Directions

Step 1 – Prepare Flower (Decarboxylation)

  1.  Preheat oven to 110°C (225° F) and line a baking sheet with aluminium foil.
  2.  Lightly break up your cannabis buds/trim and spread it evenly over the aluminium foil on the baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 30 minutes. Expect it to get smelly in your house as the steam and vapour will linger. This is expected and isn’t all the potency evaporating away just make sure the temperature is accurate.
  4. Remove the dried cannabis from the oven and grind up any bigger leftover pieces between your fingers. You don’t need to make it into a powder, but there shouldn’t be whole buds either.

Step 2 – Mix cannabis with butter & water and leave to simmer

  1. Bring around 1 Litre of water to a boil.
  2. Turn down to medium/low heat and add the butter, then wait until it melts.
  3. Add your dried marijuana to the water and stir it in. The cannabis plant matter will float, and there should be at least an inch or two of clearance under the cannabis from the bottom of the pan. If not, add more water as this will be separated later and won’t change the potency.
  4. Allow to simmer on a medium/low for 90 minutes, stirring occasionally. The bubbles should be gently rising to the top of the water but not actively boiling.
Pour cannabis in bowl with water and butter

Step 3 – Separate cannabutter solution from the plant material and water.

  1.  Line a large bowl with the layers of cheese cloth and wrap an elastic band to secure the cloths. Carefully strain the cannabis mixture in to the bowl and filter all the bits of cannabis flower.
  2. Place the bowl with the cannabutter solution into the fridge. Leave it in the fridge for around 12 hours. This will separate the fats from the water with the fat being our beautiful cannabis butter.
  3. Remove the fat from the liquid at the bottom with a spoon or spatula. This bit is tricky but you basically want to scrape out all of the canna butter that’s at the top of the bowl, leaving the water and other stuff at the bottom. Use a spoon or spatula.
  4. Once you’ve collected all the cannabis butter discard the remaining liquid. Place the cannabis butter in air tight containers and place in the freezer (keeping the canna-butter fresh and the potency high).Alternatively, you can get cracking on those weed brownies, hash cakes and cannabis cookies you’ve been dying to cook. Oh and don’t forget to give the utensils a good licking!

The cannabis butter made in the recipe above can be used to make a whole host of things. Just make sure you tell your guests if you’re having a dinner party. Why not try some of our other recipes, maybe space cakes, weed brownies or even a hash cookie?
